Small Hands on Old Stone

Children read a place with their hands. They run them over the warm limestone, gather pebbles, hold shells up to the light. The first time we took the little ones into the Calanques, I watched them grasp the material long before they had words for it. A day outdoors becomes a first lesson in stone, water and patience.

The cove small feet like

Not every calanque suits children. Port-Pin is our place, the walk is short, the entry shallow, and there is shade under the pines. The ground is rock, warm and worn round, kind to bare feet. En-Vau is steep, so we save it for when the legs are longer.

What keeps hands busy

A little net, and half the day is full. Pebbles in a thousand greys, smooth glass the sea has rounded, a feather. Children don't need a programme, they need material. Bring water for everyone, hats, water shoes for the sharp spots, bread and fruit from the market.

At the little ones' pace

We don't plan a route, we plan a morning. Every ten minutes someone stops, and that is the whole point. Whoever sorts the stones and hunts for lizards is never bored. Just before noon we reach the water, and then there is splashing until lips turn blue.

Tired, salty, happy on the way home

In the afternoon we carry the smallest ones part of the way, that is part of it. In the car everyone falls asleep. Back home in Marseille a warm shower, and in a pocket a pebble that now moves house with us. Stones like these lie all over our home, each one a day we remember.

Frequently asked

Are the Calanques suitable for children?

Yes, with the right cove and at your own pace. Port-Pin and Sormiou have short paths and calm water. For small children, bring water shoes and plenty of water.

Which calanque is best with kids?

Port-Pin, because the walk is short and the entry shallow. Sormiou works well too. En-Vau is too steep for small children.

How long is the walk with children?

About forty minutes to Port-Pin at an easy pace, longer with breaks. Plan the morning, not the distance.

What should you bring with children?

Water, hats, sunscreen, water shoes, snacks from the market and something to collect. Set off early so the heat stays mild.
