Why I Follow the Light

It took me a long time to realise that I choose rooms by their light, not their size. In Marseille it became final. A south-facing apartment, a balcony full of sun, and suddenly the day arranges itself around the light, not the clock.

Light as the first resident

Before a piece of furniture arrives, I watch how the light travels through the room. Where it lies in the morning, where it falls in the evening. A good room has a place for every hour. Light is the first resident, everything else falls in behind it.

What the south does to you

In the south you slow down. You rise with the sun, rest in the midday heat, come alive in the evening. That is not laziness, it is a rhythm the place sets. I take it with me wherever I go.

A chair, a glass, the gold

My favourite time is the hour before sunset. I sit on the balcony, the light turns gold, and for a moment everything is enough. A moment like that costs nothing and stays the longest.
